Jonathan Cheal, Agriculture Solicitor in our Wells office, has been recognised by the Country Land & Business Association (CLA) on the occasion of his standing down as Somerset Branch President. At the CLA Somerset AGM on 3 September Jonathan was presented with an engraved silver armada dish to celebrate his total of 37 years of contribution to the association.

He had done ten years as Branch President, since 2009, and before that served as a Committee member since 1987, and a Legal Adviser at Legal Department CLA in London for five years until 1987.

Ann Maidment, Director South West at the CLA, said: “We have been incredibly fortunate to have had Jonathan’s support, time, good humour and wisdom in the CLA not only as Somerset President but also in other capacities within the organisation.  It was a pleasure to work with Jonathan but also spend time with him at the Bath & West Show over recent years, and I look forward to continuing to do so.”

Jonathan has over 30 years’ experience of advising farmers and landowners on a broad range of legal and property issues. His particular specialism is in public rights of way and access to land.  It was said of him in the Chambers UK Guide “His knowledge on rights of way is vast and his manner impeccable; you always feel you’re getting the maximum value for money with his time and experience”.

Outside work Jonathan is known for his public speaking, his bow ties, his love of G&S patter songs, county cricket, books, and correct punctuation.

Congratulations Jonathan!
