FAQs About Later Life Planning – What to consider when choosing a care home?

In the second mini blog in the series of FAQs about Later Life Planning, Kate Norris explores what to consider when choosing a care home.

If the needs assessment carried out by the Local Authority shows that you need more support and care than can be given at home, the recommendation may be that you move into a care home. Choosing a care home may seem like a daunting task but this check list of things to consider and questions to ask will help you get started.

It is important to check:-

  • The care home can provide the level of care you need now and also the care you may require in the future to save any further moves.
  • Are there any vacancies?  If not, how long is the waiting list?  Always a good idea to put yourself on the waiting list as you are not obliged to take it up should you change your mind.
  • Visit the home more than once and at different times.  Speak with the manager, staff and other residents.
  • Read the brochures and check out the websites and reviews.
  • Read the most recent CQC inspection report.
  • Enquire about social activities / outings / food
  • Make sure you can bring any home comforts with you for your room.
