Lockdown inspired family law practice for the better

Lockdown has forced us all to evaluate our lives and how we work and the family team at Mogers Drewett are no different. Family Partner, Rebecca Silcock shares how her team have embraced change and how those changes will benefit our clients.

Video meetings

Like many businesses that had tried but never fully committed to video meetings, lockdown forced us all to embrace online meetings. We now offer meetings via video platforms such as Teams or Zoom to all our clients and even though our offices are safely open for those wanting a face to face meetings we are finding that some clients prefer video.

There are the obvious time and cost savings as travel to a meeting is no longer needed but being able to have a meeting in the comfort of your own home for some will make the process easier. Additionally if you have left that vital piece of paperwork at home – you can just go and find it.

Environmentally Friendly

Like many businesses lockdown has fast tracked investment in new technology, in order to continue business as usual for clients.

The legal system in particular is notorious for dealing in a large amount of paper files but lockdown meant this was no longer possible and so everything had to go electronically.

We now have an electronic bundling system which replaces old paper court bundles, and legal documents such as statements. Not only is this more environmentally friendly but also more user friendly as all “papers” are indexed and linked so you can click on the page you want to open. As its electronic it is fully amendable with documents easily added, updated or removed as the case progresses.

Virtual Court Hearings

Virtual court hearings and meetings with barristers are now routine, we have new procedures in place to explain process to reassure clients and ensure they are comfortable with this change.

For those clients who have young children or struggle to find somewhere private to conduct this hearing at home, we invite them into our office. This can give the client the benefit and reassurance of us being present whilst attending court remotely.

Virtual hearings can help to speed up the process and some clients prefer meeting online rather than having to attend court.

Investment in technology

All our incoming post and documentation is now scanned and saved electronically against the relevant files. This means we can access your entire file remotely and see all documents whenever required and wherever we are.

This is far more secure for clients as papers do not need to be moved when we are working at home.

In the office

Finally if our clients need to or want to come into any one of our offices in Bath, Frome, Sherborne or Wells we have made a lot of changes to ensure both our clients and teams are Covid safe.

The changes include screens in meeting rooms, availability of PPE and hand sanitisers, requirement to book client meetings to ensure we can adhere to social distancing rules. For more information about what to expect when you come back to our offices we have produced a video.
