Mogers Drewett jumps on Wells Carnival bandwagon

Somerset Carnivals are now upon us, with Bridgwater kicking off the season on 2nd November. This year, Mogers Drewett are proud to sponsor the local Wells based Globe Carnival Club and their Steampunk Revolution themed cart.

The celebration of Carnival dates back to the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 and is highly regarded as the largest illuminated processions in the world – travelling between Bridgwater, Burnham on Sea, Weston Super Mare, North Petherton, Midsomer Norton, Shepton Mallet, Wells and Glastonbury. Each carnival holds a street collection which helps local charities.

Employees at Mogers Drewett Wells office, have been reminiscing about their experiences and memories of Carnival.

“I can still recall the light and heat that was emitted from the carts which was very welcome on a chilly November evening” says Victoria Strode.  “I was amazed at the energy of all the performers, it was as if they had only started the procession but they had been going for hours!  You can really feel the passion and hard work that goes into it.”

Tom Chiffers remembers as a child, his father creating a make-shift ‘viewing platform’ out of two ladders and a plank of wood that was the envy of all those around.  “People must have thought my Dad was mad when they saw him carrying the ladders and plank towards the route of the carnival.  However quizzical looks were replaced by those of envy when the crowds gathered and my brother and I had the best view of anyone.  We got lots of requests for people to perch on the steps of the ladders so that they could get a better view.  The pirate floats were always my favourite.”

Not just a spectator, Cara Burr actually performed on a cart, ensuring the best position – on top of the generator (it was the 70s!)

We look forward to welcoming the procession to Wells on Friday 15th November.
