Frome…a town which loves good food!
Food shopping in Frome has always been enjoyable with the award winning monthly farmers market held at the Cheese & Grain on the 2nd Saturday of the month from 9am-1pm. The large solar powered indoor venue holds up to 38 farmers and food producers and you would be hard pushed to find a better selection of produce anywhere outside of London and certainly not in a town the size of Frome!
At a market this size the producers invariably must compete with each other and this helps to drive up quality and attracts customers who appreciate the delicious choices to be made……Shall it be award winning Mere Fish farm’s trout or freshly caught Dorset Lobster- organic beef or Somerset’s own Water buffalo, White Lake goats cheese or Wootton’s organic sheep’s cheese !
When Somerset Farmers Markets were invited to also take part in the Frome Supermarket on the 1st Sunday of the month –it gave them an additional opportunity to trade, but this time bringing along an outdoor canopy market and setting up around the Market Cross in the centre of town it’s a whole different atmosphere.
Somerset Farmers Markets bring along 24 producers with a slightly different twist –more food to eat on the go so you’ll have Brown Cow Organic beef but also selling their delicious burgers on the day! They are able to show case new producers such as Wedmores Bio-aqua farm who re-cycles rain water into large fish tanks for growing trout and then uses a hydroponic system to pump the nutrient rich fishy water into his greenhouses to grow his salads and vegetables.
Both Frome events add up to great complimentary shopping experiences in a town that undeniably loves good food!
